Hot Water Tank Rebate Summary
Available support depends on the existing water-heating fuel, home type, household income, utility provider and the replacement equipment being installed.
These programs are separate rebate pathways and should not be assumed to stack. Confirm the applicable utility, product requirements and any pre-approval or pre-registration requirements before purchasing equipment or beginning installation.
Are Hot Water Tank Rebates Available in BC?

Yes, but the type of water heater being removed and the equipment being installed determine whether a rebate is available.
The largest residential incentives generally apply when an existing electric, natural-gas, propane or oil water-heating system is replaced with an eligible electric heat pump water heater. Conventional electric-resistance tanks and ordinary gas storage tanks do not receive the same level of support.
A homeowner who simply replaces an older gas storage tank with another gas storage tank should not assume that a general rebate is available. FortisBC’s current public residential offers instead provide a water-heater add-on for eligible new gas connections and a maintenance rebate for tankless units.
Available Rebates and Incentives in BC
Available Rebates
FortisBC – Water Heater Rebates
FortisBC offers several separate water-heating programs.
Standard residential heat pump water heater rebate: Eligible residential electricity customers may receive $1,000 when replacing a standard electric storage tank with an approved heat pump water heater.
Income-qualified rebate: Eligible FortisBC and participating municipal-electricity customers may receive $2,500. The existing system must be a standard electric storage tank, and additional income, property and occupancy requirements apply.
Connect to Gas add-on: New FortisBC gas customers may receive up to $800 for an eligible water heater when it is installed as part of a qualifying oil- or propane-to-gas space-heating conversion. It is not a standalone rebate for an ordinary gas-tank replacement.
Tankless maintenance: Residential gas customers may receive $50 for eligible tankless water-heater servicing by a licensed gas contractor. Conventional storage tanks are not covered by this maintenance offer.
Commercial and multi-unit projects: Eligible commercial, agricultural and multi-unit residential electricity customers may receive:
- $2,000 per unit for an all-in-one heat pump water heater
- $3,000 per unit for a CO₂ heat-pump water-heating system
These programs can apply to eligible existing buildings and new construction.
FortisBC also lists up to $50,000 for qualifying direct-contact water heaters used in industrial processes. This is not a residential domestic-hot-water rebate.
CleanBC Better Homes Rebates
CleanBC Better Homes provides the largest income-based water-heating incentives.
Through the Energy Savings Program, eligible households may receive up to $3,500 for a qualifying heat pump water heater. The amount depends on household income, household size, property value and the fuel used by the existing water heater.
For eligible condo and apartment units, current maximums are:
- $3,500 for Income Level 1
- $2,800 for Income Level 2
Applicants must register before installation and receive an eligibility code. A contractor registered with the Energy Savings Program must supply and install the equipment and submit the rebate documentation.
CleanBC may also support eligible fossil-fuel-to-heat-pump-water-heater conversions. Removal or proper decommissioning of the old fuel equipment may be required.
BC Hydro Rebates
BC Hydro’s standard Home Renovation Rebate Program offers $1,000 for an eligible heat pump water heater replacing the home’s primary electric water heater.
The new model must:
- Appear as Tier 2 or higher on the NEEA qualified-products list
- Be installed by a licensed contractor
- Replace the primary electric water heater
- Be submitted for rebate within six months of the invoice date
Self-installations are not eligible. Replacing an existing heat pump water heater is also excluded from the standard offer.
BC Hydro also provides a separate $1,000 condo and apartment rebate. This program requires pre-approval before installation, and the approval code is generally valid for six months. The existing unit must use an electric primary water heater.
Federal Programs
The Canada Greener Homes Grant is closed, and funding for the Canada Greener Homes Loan is fully committed.
These programs should not be presented as current financing options for new applicants in 2026.

Which Water Heaters Do Not Have a General Rebate?
The following projects generally do not qualify for the principal residential incentives:
- Replacing an electric-resistance tank with another resistance tank
- Replacing a gas storage tank with another gas storage tank as an existing gas customer
- Servicing a conventional gas storage tank under the tankless maintenance program
- Replacing an existing heat pump water heater with another heat pump model
- Installing equipment without the required contractor or pre-approval
Program rules differ, so eligibility should be confirmed before equipment is purchased.
Heat Pump, Tankless or Conventional Storage Tank?
A conventional electric tank is usually straightforward to replace but receives no major rebate when replaced with another resistance tank.
A gas storage tank may suit a home with an existing gas connection, but a standard gas-to-gas replacement generally has limited rebate support.
A tankless system heats water on demand. The current FortisBC offer applies to maintenance, not to the general purchase of a new tankless unit.
A heat pump water heater uses surrounding air to heat stored water. It receives the strongest current residential support but requires suitable room volume, condensate drainage, electrical capacity and ventilation.

Is an EnerGuide Evaluation Required?
An EnerGuide evaluation is not normally required for the principal water-heater rebates.
The most common requirements are:
- Eligible existing equipment
- Approved replacement model
- Licensed installation
- Complete paid invoice
- Pre-approval where required
- Application within the deadline
An EnerGuide evaluation may still be useful when the water-heater project forms part of a wider home-energy retrofit.
How to Protect Your Rebate Eligibility
Confirm the existing fuel, utility provider and property type before selecting equipment.
For CleanBC income-qualified programs, register before installation. For BC Hydro condo and apartment rebates, obtain pre-approval before work begins.
Verify the exact model number on the applicable qualified-products list and use the contractor required by the selected program.
Keep the invoice, approval codes, proof of payment, product information and any required strata or landlord consent.
