British Columbia residents may qualify for smart thermostat rebates, instant retail discounts, free devices or ongoing bill credits. The available offer depends on the utility provider, primary heating system, household income and whether the thermostat is purchased independently or installed with an eligible central heating system.

Current support ranges from a $100 instant retail discount to a $200 income-qualified rebate. Eligible BC Hydro customers can also receive a $100 Peak Saver enrollment credit, followed by a $50 seasonal reward. A separate BC Hydro offer for free electric-baseboard thermostats is scheduled to launch in fall 2026.

These offers follow different eligibility rules. Do not assume that an instant purchase discount, installation rebate and Peak Saver reward can all be combined. Confirm the exact thermostat model, heating-system type and program terms before purchase or installation.

The heating system matters. A thermostat designed for a central furnace, boiler or heat pump follows different eligibility rules from a line-voltage thermostat controlling electric baseboards.

FortisBC – Smart Thermostat Rebate

FortisBC currently provides several separate thermostat offers. They should not be presented as one universal $150 rebate.

Instant Retail Rebate: $100

Eligible customers can receive an immediate $100 discount on selected smart thermostats purchased from participating retailers.

The 2026 campaign runs from March 1 through October 31, 2026. The discount is applied at checkout, so customers cannot apply for it after purchasing an ineligible product or buying outside the campaign.

Eligible customers include:

FortisBC residential natural-gas customers
FortisBC residential electricity customers
Eligible municipal-electricity customers in Grand Forks, Penticton, Summerland and Nelson Hydro

Only models and retailer SKUs on the current qualifying list receive the discount. The 2026 list includes selected products from ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home, Emerson and Mysa.

Connected Thermostat Rebate: Up to $150

Residential FortisBC electricity customers and participating municipal-electricity customers may receive up to $150 for an eligible connected thermostat installed with or during servicing of a central electric heating system.

Eligible primary systems include:

Electric furnaces
Electric boilers
Electric combination space-and-water-heating systems
Electric air-source heat pumps

Electric baseboard heating does not qualify for this particular rebate.

Only one thermostat rebate is available per home. The thermostat must control the primary heating system and be installed by a licensed contractor. Self-installation is not eligible.

Income-Qualified Rebate: Up to $200

Income-qualified FortisBC electricity customers and eligible municipal-electricity customers may receive up to $200.

The heating-system requirements are similar to the standard $150 offer. The thermostat must control an eligible central electric furnace, boiler or heat pump. Baseboard thermostats are excluded from this application-based rebate.

Applicants must also meet current household-income, property-ownership, home-age and floor-area requirements. Proof of income is required, and the rebate cannot exceed the invoiced cost.

Indigenous Community Rebate: $200

Eligible homes participating through FortisBC’s Indigenous-community energy-efficiency program may receive $200 per home for an eligible ENERGY STAR connected thermostat.

The thermostat may also be offered as an add-on to certain qualifying furnace or dual-fuel heating upgrades.

Social-Housing Rebate: $60 Per Unit

Eligible social-housing retrofit projects may receive $60 per connected thermostat.

The thermostat must be ENERGY STAR certified, and the primary heating system’s energy source must be supplied by FortisBC. This pathway is intended for eligible housing providers rather than an ordinary individual homeowner application.

BC Hydro Rebates

BC Hydro’s current thermostat support is primarily connected to its Peak Saver demand-response program rather than a traditional post-purchase rebate.

Peak Saver Enrollment Credit: $100

An eligible BC Hydro residential customer who enrolls a qualifying smart thermostat in Peak Saver can receive a one-time $100 bill credit.

During limited peak-demand events, BC Hydro may adjust the thermostat by a small amount for up to four hours. The customer retains manual override control.

Seasonal Peak Saver Reward: $50

Participants may receive an additional $50 seasonal reward for keeping their thermostat enrolled and participating during the winter season.

Customers who opt out of more than half of the events may lose eligibility for the seasonal payment.

Free Baseboard Thermostats: Coming Fall 2026

Starting in fall 2026, eligible BC Hydro residential customers with electric baseboard heating will be able to receive up to five free smart baseboard thermostats.

The announced offer includes compatible models from Mysa and Sinopé. Devices will ship at no cost and must remain enrolled in Peak Saver. Participants can also receive the $50 seasonal reward.

This offer had not yet launched as of July 28, 2026. Customers should not purchase equipment expecting reimbursement unless BC Hydro confirms that the program is open and the household is eligible.

CleanBC Better Homes Rebates

CleanBC Better Homes does not currently list a broad standalone smart thermostat rebate for general households through the standard Home Renovation Rebate Program or the income-qualified Energy Savings Program.

Its major current residential incentives focus on measures such as heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, insulation, windows and related upgrade add-ons.

A smart thermostat may still be included as part of an eligible heating-system installation, but the thermostat should not automatically be presented as a separate CleanBC rebate.

Federal Programs

There is no current broad federal rebate dedicated only to purchasing a residential smart thermostat.

The Canada Greener Homes Grant is closed, and funding for new Canada Greener Homes Loan applications is fully committed. Older pages describing these programs as an active thermostat funding source should be updated.

Which Heating Systems Qualify?

Central Electric Heating

FortisBC’s $150 and $200 application-based rebates apply to eligible central electric systems, including electric furnaces, boilers and heat pumps.

The thermostat must control the home’s primary heating system.

Electric Baseboard Heating

Baseboard heating does not qualify for FortisBC’s standard connected-thermostat installation rebate.

Baseboard households may instead qualify for:

BC Hydro’s upcoming free baseboard-thermostat offer
BC Hydro Peak Saver rewards where the model and account are eligible

Natural-Gas Heating

FortisBC natural-gas customers can use the $100 instant retail offer for qualifying products during the 2026 campaign.

They should not assume they qualify for the separate $150 central-electric rebate, which requires electricity supplied by FortisBC or an eligible municipal utility as the primary heating energy source.

Heat Pumps and Dual-Fuel Systems

A connected thermostat may qualify when installed with or during maintenance of an eligible central electric heat pump.

Dual-fuel systems require compatible controls that correctly manage the heat pump and backup heating source. The thermostat should be selected according to the equipment manufacturer’s requirements and the approved system configuration.

Smart Thermostat vs Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat follows a fixed time schedule.

A smart or connected thermostat can also provide features such as:

Wi-Fi control
Mobile-app access
Occupancy detection
Geofencing
Learning schedules
Energy-use reports
Utility demand-response participation

A Wi-Fi connection alone does not guarantee rebate eligibility. The exact brand, model number and retailer SKU must appear on the relevant qualifying list.

Main Installation Requirements

Before purchasing a thermostat:

Confirm the utility account and primary heating fuel.
Identify whether the system is central or baseboard heating.
Check the exact thermostat model on the qualifying-products list.
Confirm whether the offer is an instant discount, application rebate or utility reward.
Determine whether contractor installation is mandatory.
Keep the itemized receipt and installation invoice.
Apply or enroll within the required period.

The invoice for an application-based rebate should normally identify the thermostat manufacturer, model number, installation cost, contractor details and the heating system it controls.

Can the Thermostat Be Self-Installed?

It depends on the program.

The FortisBC instant retail offer applies at checkout and does not use the same installation process as the $150 or $200 application-based rebates.

FortisBC’s standard and income-qualified connected-thermostat rebates require installation by an eligible licensed contractor. Self-installed thermostats do not qualify for those rebates.

BC Hydro’s free baseboard-thermostat offer will have its own installation and enrollment rules when the program launches.

Can Different Thermostat Incentives Be Combined?

Do not assume that the purchase discount, installation rebate and utility enrollment reward can all be combined.
