Indigenous Community Energy Services BC

Planning energy upgrades across a community’s homes is rarely a single decision. Housing teams balance heating costs, aging buildings, resident comfort, funding rules and contractor schedules all at once. Monolith Housing Solutions provides Indigenous community energy services that bring those pieces together: energy assessments, retrofit planning, heat pump and ventilation design, airtightness testing and commissioning, delivered for First Nations housing departments, Indigenous housing providers and the contractors who work with them.

Most projects start with a clear picture of each home. Our EnerGuide home evaluations are completed by a registered energy advisor and meet the assessment requirements of the Partners in Indigenous Energy Efficiency and Resilience (PIEER) program. This page explains the services we offer, how they connect to current BC Hydro, FortisBC and CleanBC programs, and what your team can expect from the first call to project closeout.

Who We Support

Who We Work With

Our work is built for the people who plan, fund and deliver housing and building projects in Indigenous communities. Each group needs something slightly different, so we shape the scope around the role you play.

Indigenous Housing Teams

Energy assessments, retrofit priorities and technical documentation for First Nations governments, Indigenous governing bodies and housing providers.

Community Facility Managers

Energy studies, heating-system planning, performance testing and commissioning for community centres, administration buildings and other facilities.

Contractors and Design Teams

Energy modelling, load calculations, ventilation design, testing and project documentation for builders, HVAC contractors, architects and project managers.

How We Work in Your Community

A Working Relationship Built on Respect

Your community sets the priorities, and our role is to support them with accurate technical information. Before any site work begins, we agree with your designated contact on communication, site access, scheduling and how residents will be informed.

Monolith is based in North Vancouver and welcomes enquiries from communities across British Columbia. Travel, site coverage and scheduling are confirmed in each proposal.

Local protocols

We follow the protocols your community identifies and respect residents' homes during every visit.

Information ownership

We discuss how project data will be collected, stored, shared and returned to your housing team.

Knowledge sharing

Where requested, housing and maintenance staff can join walkthroughs and receive plain-language explanations of the findings.

Working with your team

We coordinate with your existing contractors and consultants rather than replacing them.

Permission first

We do not use project photos or community names in our marketing without written permission.

What We Do

Energy Services for Homes and Community Buildings

The services below can be booked on their own or combined into a single project scope. Most community projects use two or three of them in sequence: assess, plan and design, then verify.

1

Assess

Know where each home loses energy

2

Plan and Design

Size equipment and set priorities

3

Verify

Test, commission and document

Step 1 · Assess

Home Energy Assessments and Retrofit Planning

We provide EnerGuide evaluations for eligible homes, identify improvement opportunities and prepare recommendations. For projects involving several homes, we coordinate visits and consolidate findings to help your housing team set priorities and budgets.

Where a broader building condition assessment is needed, we define the additional scope and coordinate qualified specialists as required.

Step 2 · Plan and Design

Heat Pump Sizing and Ventilation Design

We complete CSA F280 heating and cooling load calculations, support equipment selection and provide HRV/ERV ventilation design. We account for planned insulation, window and air-sealing improvements and coordinate with your installing contractor.

Community Buildings

Community Facility Energy Studies and Commissioning

Administration buildings, community centres, schools and daycares often carry the largest single energy bills in a community. We assess how these buildings use energy, compare retrofit options and support heating system upgrades, including fuel-switching heat pump projects.

Services can include energy modelling, whole-building airtightness testing and building commissioning or recommissioning to confirm that new and existing systems run as designed. Study and design scopes are matched to the building and the funding route, with qualified specialists engaged where the work requires them.

New Construction

New Housing and High Performance Design

New homes are the best opportunity to build in lower operating costs from the start. We provide energy modelling, BC Energy Step Code compliance support, envelope and mechanical design coordination and construction-stage verification testing. Net Zero and other high performance targets can be added where they suit your community's plans and budget.

Project Coordination and Funding Documentation

Funded projects succeed or stall on paperwork. We help organize assessment schedules, home inventories, technical scopes, contractor information and completion records in the format each program asks for. Our scope can also include solar feasibility screening and coordination with qualified installers. Responsibilities and fees are defined in writing before work begins.

Funding Programs That May Support Your Project

Funding depends on the applicant, building type, utility service, existing heating system and proposed upgrades. We help identify potential programs and the technical documentation needed to support your application.

FAQ

YOU ASK, WE ANSWER

Yes. We provide a separate technical scope and coordinate with your chosen contractor, housing department and any other consultants on the project.

Yes. We group site visits, prepare consistent reports for each home and add a community summary. The proposal confirms the number of homes, deliverables, access arrangements and travel costs.

For most detached homes and small multiplexes, an EnerGuide evaluation is the simplest route and is widely accepted by programs. If your community is already preparing a CMHC or Indigenous Services Canada application, a condition assessment with an energy component can serve both purposes. Townhome complexes can use an ASHRAE Level 2 audit instead.

Funding may cover some or most eligible costs, but the program administrator decides on approval and payment. We present our scope and fees separately from any expected incentive so your team can see the full budget.

No. PIEER provides a free Energy Coach through the program administrators. Monolith provides paid technical and project services and works alongside the coach and your housing team, with clear responsibilities for each party.

Yes. We welcome projects across British Columbia, including remote communities. Travel and scheduling are planned with your team and included in the proposal.

Yes. We can review your home’s needs and point you to relevant household rebates. PIEER applications are made by an eligible Indigenous governing body, while individual rebates such as the CleanBC Energy Savings Program have their own requirements.
